To curb dengue fever, mosquitoes tested from over 1000 places in TN

People in the state of TN get affected by dengue fever is well known. In the last 8 months under the new policy, hundreds of mosquitoes from more than 1000 places in TN were tested for dengue virus. The main objective behind this activity was to help the health officials to map potential viral hot spots plus to initiate vector control measures before an outbreak. Officials tested aedes mosquitoes from as many as 1272 places in 43 health unit districts. They identified 273 samples or 21.4% samples positive for dengue antigen.

It must be noted in 2018 as many as 1887 mosquito pools were analysed and 87 (4.6%) tested positive. Point is each pool had atleast 25 mosquitoes. As per the director of public health, Dr. K. Kolandaisamy, it is clear that not all aedes carry virus and not every insect affected could spread the virus. He explained about how female infected mosquito injects this virus in the humans and how it could make the humans seriously ill.

Dr. Kolandaisamy then spoke about how if the density of dengue affected aedes mosquito is known then aggressive anti-larval measures would be taken and they would be given more priority. The shocking information is aedes mosquitoes have killed nearly 80 persons in TN in the last 3 years and almost 30,000 persons have been hospitalized.

It is revealed that the conductive environment in TN has been responsible for the growth of these aedes mosquitoes and now many in India are affected by this vector borne viral disease. For the aedes mosquitoes to grow and multiply, water stored in the open containers in the drought times plus the stagnant water in items like discarded tyres, coconut shells, cups etc are important.

It was pointed out by former Chennai city health officer, Mr. Kuganandam that dengue is endemic and there has been decline in the malaria also due to the shift in mosquito population. Sporadic cases were detected throughout the year and it was in the monsoons or in the drought times etc large clusters were found. It is worthy to note that between the years 2017 and 2019 there were 500 deaths and 1.94 lakhs cases in India. It was mentioned by Dr. Kolandaisamy that TN has been among the top 3 states in the dengue cases in India. He explained about how in this year there was conductive environment for the mosquitoes to grow and how the number of cases was kept under control.
