It is insisted that the government should take the necessary initiatives to facilitate all government and government-aided schools students to speak English.
As per the recent order issued by the Chennai High Court, the state government secretary for school education Pradeep Yadav met with MLA Appavu and discussed regarding this.
Subsequently, MLA Appavu shared with the press: There are 37211 primary, middle-level, and higher secondary schools in the state of Tamil Nadu. Apart from this, there are 8403 government-aided schools as well. All the schools adopt Tamil as the medium language for teaching. 85 lakhs boys and girls students are studying in these schools.
English is being taught right from the 2nd Standard up to +2 levels.
However, the students coming out of these schools are not good enough to speak English fluently. So, I went to the Chennai High Court regarding this. As per the High Court Order, the Chief Secretary of the state government of Tamil Nadu called me.
Only the students taught in Tamil medium are not skilled to speak in English. However, the students in 12419 schools which teach in English medium are able to speak English fluently!
With this drawback as one of the main reasons, there has been a substantial reduction in the number of students joining in Tamil medium every year by a margin of 1 Lakh! A situation has arisen where the schools teaching Tamil medium are constrained to be closed!
To prevent these happening, arrangements must immediately be made for the students studying from 2nd Standard to +2 level for special coaching in spoken English!
