Plant nurseries to be present in the primary schools in TN

Posted on: 10/Jun/2019 10:12:16 AM
Dont be surprised when you come across a plant nursery in the primary schools in the state of Tamil Nadu in the future. It is now revealed that these primary schools in TN would get plant nurseries and these nurseries would be taken care of by the students studying in these schools. It was mentioned by some officials belonging to the school education department that the children would have to compulsorily grow saplings and nurture them under the supervision of the teachers.

As per an official of school education department it is clear that this idea to grow plants in the primary schools was not a new concept because many countries have got gardens in their schools and these gardens are taken care by the students. The school education minister, Mr. Sengottaiyan made many heads turn few months ago when he announced that 2 extra marks would be awarded for each subjects to those students who plant 2 trees. It was later pointed out by the officials of the school education department that they were yet to receive any directive to award marks to the students for growing trees.

The official spoke about how by planting trees would bring a sense of responsibility amongst students towards the environment. Initially this planting of trees would be with primary schools and later on it would be rolled out to higher classes also. It is brought out that the forest department would provide the necessary support.

It must be noted that on 5th June there was a directive from the environment ministry about planting saplings. The important information is Mr. Prakash Javedekar, who is the union minister for environment announced about the launching of School Nursery, an initiative where the school kids would plant a seed, nurture the sapling and would take the plant as Trophy on the annual result day.

According to a green activist and conservationist, Grow Your Own Veggies Trust, Mr. Alladi Mahadevan, the initiative was sensational and he appreciated it. He spoke about how in the past the children learnt about the environment the closer they would be to the nature and how in todays time this is lacking. He expressed his unhappiness about the children who are clueless about the plants, trees etc.  Finally he threw light on how the present day students do not know from where their daily food comes from and how from reading the textbooks only information was got.

The superb information is Mr. Alladi Mahadevan has associated with the West Saidapet based Chennai Girls Higher Secondary School and in this school an organic farm has been established. As per Mahadevan what the students do not learn inside the classrooms could be taught to them by making it compulsory to have an organic farm in the schools.
