Corporation to take steps to sterilize strays

Posted on: 11/Mar/2013 11:10:26 AM
The number of injuries caused by stray dogs has increased alarmingly in the city. The latest to be attacked was a 5 year old who was returning home. In the wake of these incidents, the Chennai Corporation is stepping up the stray animal sterilization process. According to reports, there are currently 1.5 lakh stray animals in the city that need to undergo the process.

The Corporation says that they find it difficult to find people to do the job. ‘Not many people are interested in the job. This, despite the fact that we have doubled the rate per dog caught to Rs. 50. We are prepared to hire people on a contract basis but it is a specialised job’, says an official. ‘We have supplied additional dog-catching vehicles exclusively to the newly-expanded areas. We have asked the health department to catch more dogs under the birth-control programme so their numbers on the road do not multiply rapidly.’
