Cyclonic storm Gaja is making sensational news now. It is now said that red alert has been issued on Sunday, 11th November 2018, on the coastal districts of Tamil Nadu and Chennai for Thursday, 15th November 2018. It is worthy to mention that deep depression over the Bay of Bengal has intensified into cyclonic storm ‘Gaja’ and in the next 24 hours of time it might turn into severe cyclone. This cyclone ‘Gaja’ might move towards north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh coast and on 15th of November it would make landfall between Chennai and Nagapattinam. Named by Thailand, the cyclone ‘Gaja’ is presently located 840 km of Chennai coast and 980 km away from Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh.

Mr. S. Balachandran, who is the deputy director of IMD, spoke about how the system might bring heavy rainfall in Chennai city and in the coastal places in Tamil Nadu. According to the forecast it might weaken as it nears the coast and makes a landfall on Thursday. Over the past 6 hours of time, the storm had moved west northwards at a speed of 13km.

According to the forecast given by IMD it is clear that on Wednesday heavy rains would occur in the isolated places over north coastal TN and Puducherry. Heavy to very heavy rains with isolated showers would occur at few places over north Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on Thursday. On Monday and Tuesday, Chennai city would be cloudy and the city might not receive rains on these two days.

More strength to the system would be provided by the distance across Bay of Bengal, warm sea surface temperature and low vertical wind shear.
