Posted on: 17/Sep/2018 6:55:33 PM
Southwest Monsoon season does not give a lot of rainfall activity over the state of Tamil Nadu. However, the state still managed to receive normal Monsoon conditions. thus, we can say that the overall performance of Monsoon was satisfactory as rains stayed near normal. In fact, at the end of August, Tamil Nadu was rain deficient by only 8%.

Now, even though Monsoon has gone weak over Pan India and rainfall activity is only confined to few pockets. Tamil Nadu has been receiving good rains, as a cyclonic circulation is seen over Andhra Pradesh and a trough is running from this system up to Tamil Nadu.

Since the last three days, heavy to very heavy rains have been witnessed over many parts of the state. The capital city, Chennai observed moderate rain showers.

Moreover, 3-digit rain to the tune of 108 mm also occurred in the city of Thanjavur. During the last 24 hours, rains were excess for the day by 89%.

In the last 24 hours from 08:30 am on Sunday, Tiruvallur recorded 68 mm of rain, followed by Chennai 46 mm, Dharmapuri 43 mm, Yercaud 39 mm, Thiruttani 32 mm, Aarogyavaram 22 mm and Tirupati 15 mm.

Further also, as we expect a system to develop in Bay of Bengal, thus rainfall activity is likely to continue over many parts of the state during the next 24 hours. However, after 24 hours, rains will reduce significantly.
