Jewellery sales up on the occasion of Aadi Perukku

There were large crowds in the jewellery shops yesterday (Thursday, 3rd August) on the occasion of Aadi Perukku. The jewellery traders informed that the sales were up by 25% as compared to the normal daily sales.

The Tamil month of Aadi is considered as a very sacred month when the people offer prayers, special pooja and observe penances to the Goddesses Andal, Ambal, and Amman in various temples throughout Tamil Nadu. Preparing a divine offering of Pongal on the premises of the temple and offering to the God/Goddess, piercing the body and coming by foot on a procession to the temple, carrying pots of milk, and carrying different types of Kavadis are some of the penance-related activities undertaken by the devotees.

In a similar vein, on this auspicious occasion of Aadi Perukku (observed on the 18th day of the Tamil month Aadi), the people visited the jewellery shops in large numbers and bought jewellery items for the coming good occasions such as marriage, in their families and also dollars with images of Gods to be attached to their sacred chain worn during their marriage (thaali).

Because of this, there was a larger crowd in all jewellery shops in the areas of T Nagar, Mylapore, Purasaiwalkam, and Broadway.

The President of the Chennai Gold and Diamond Traders Association, Mr Jayanthilal Salani, explained that it is the general belief of the people that buying jewels on the occasion of Aadi Perukku will bring prosperity. They also buy jewellery for the future good occasions in their families.

As such, there were larger crowds yesterday as compared to the normal days when more people visited the jewellery shops for purchase, The younger group of women showed a preference for the jewellery items of light weight. The sales of jewellery were up by 25% yesterday (Thursday, 3rd August).
