Deepavali festival buying spree - 3000 kg Gold sold

With the exuberant of Deepavali purchase spree, around 3000 kg of gold jewellery have been sold. This is higher when compared to the last year’s sales.
There are 35000 jewellery shops in Tamil Nadu. There are 7000 jewellery shops in Chennai Metro. On an average, 1200 kg of gold jewellery has been sold daily. It is usual to expect more sales during the periods of Akshaya Trithiyai and Deepavali and other festival seasons.
The festival of Deepavali was celebrated grandly throughout the country on 29th October. On this special occasion, most companies paid the bonus to their employees.

During the last year (2015), in spite of the heavy rains, 2850 kg of gold was sold.
However, there were no rains this year. Further, it is a traditional belief that buying gold on the day of Dhanatriyodas (which occurred on Friday, 28th October, a day before Deepavali). It is traditional to buy gold coins with Goddess of Wealth Lakshmi’s image as it is believed that it will bring prosperity. Until recent times, this tradition was more strongly prevalent in the Northern part of the country,However, this has now spread to South India as well. Especially, people from Tamil Nadu have taken to the tradition of buying gold on the day of Dhanattriyodasi.
Because of this, the sales of gold coins bearing Goddess of Wealth Lakshmi’s image sold at a feverish pitch. In fact, people could be seen standing in the queue to buy this Lakshmi gold coin.
Thus, there was quite a brisk sale in all the jewellery shops throughout Tamil Nadu.
Information is gathered that 3000 kg of gold were sold during this festive season.It is observed that this trend of 3000 kg gold sales is only likely to go up further rather than coming down.
