The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has recommended banning the use of cancer causing chemical in breads. The centre is likely to comply with this and impose the same soon.

The centre for Science and Environment has tested roti, bun, pav, burger, pizza, etc sold in leading brands. It is found that these breads contain cancer causing chemicals like potassium bromate, potassium iodate, etc. These chemicals are not banned in India. Such chemicals are included in the list of 11,000 ingredients.

Hence, the centre of Science and Environment has requested to ban these products in India. The results of the study were studied by Food Standards Authority. As per this, products containing potassium bromate is recommended to be removed from the list.

Speaking about this, the chief executive officer of the department, Pavan Kumar Agarwal said that their department has requested for banning potassium bromate. Announcements about the same will be made in another one month. Following this, the chemical will be completely banned.

Coming on to Potassium iodate, research will soon be made to know its harmful effects and decided according to its results.

In his note about the same, the Union Health Minister JP Natta said that the National Food Safety Standards Commission is requested to study in detail about the chemicals added in such breads. Necessary action will be taken soon after receiving research reports.
