Jewellery shop owners withdraw their 18-day shop closure

The protest against the recently imposed 1 percent Kalal Tax on jewellery items by all jewellery shop owners throughout the country and the shop closure has come to an end.

The protest & the shop closure was observed from 2nd March.

Jewellery Shop Owners Associations had informed that as a protest against another issue - he ruling that PAN card details will be required for purchase of jewellery over Rs, 2 Lakhs - shops will remain closed for 3 days from 2nd March.

This strike went on to become an indefinite strike. Over 3 Lakh jewellery shops had remained closed throughout the country.

35000 jewellery shops remained closed in the state of Tamil Nadu alone.

In Chennai Metro City, popular jewellery shops located in the suburban areas including T nagar, Sowcarpet, and Purasaiwalkam remained closed.

Even the jewellery production plants, 1000 jewellery shops in Madurai, 300 jewellery shops in Salem, 150 jewellery shops in Thirunelveli district remained closed.

As all the shops and the production plant remained closed, the jewellery shop areas remained un occupied.

Over 35000 jewellery shops in Tamil Nadu, including the production plants and the workers over 13 lakhs in this industry participated in the strike and shop closure.

This strike has led to the loss of several thousands of Crores of Rupees for Tamil Nadu and a loss of over several lakh crore Rupees for the central government.

In this scenario, the president of the Gems & Jewellery Shop Owners Association, Mr. Sridhar, has announced he withdrawal of this 18-day strike.

It is understood that the decision to withdraw from the strike was based on certain assurances given by the central Finance Minister.
