Facebook to side with telecom operators in differential pricing issue

Posted on: 12/Jan/2016 5:57:09 PM
Facebook has decided to support telecom operators in the issue of differential pricing of data services. In an official statement, Facebook said, The short answer is yes. Differential pricing, as the term is used in the consultation paper, should generally continue to be allowed.

Telecom watchdog TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) will hold a meeting before framing recommendations for net neutrality.

The IT industry in India has opposed the concept of differential pricing. According to them, the platform will reduce freedom of the user in accessing Internet content and will limit their access to content that is offered for free.

Facebook said, Zero rating plans  can lead to increase in Internet adoption at no cost to the government, the content provider or the consumers. The firm said that it supports core principle of net neutrality. Facebook supports strong net neutrality rules, including prohibitions on blocking, throttling and paid prioritisation... Zero rating is permitted in the vast majority of jurisdictions around the world and these plans should be evaluated case by case, based on a number of criteria... Those jurisdictions that have engaged in extensive deliberation over zero rating, including the EU and the US, have concluded that adoption of net neutrality rules does not require banning zero rating... Consumers watching video can quickly consume an extraordinary amount of bandwidth–leading to the necessity of some kind of limitation…This would not show someone the full power of the Internet, so people would be unlikely to become full time Internet users... Thus that prohibition would not appear to reach zero rating or sponsored data programmes, since all subscribers pay the same price (zero) are subject to the same terms, for the same class of service.
