The Chief Election Officer has mentioned that the dates for the Tamil Nadu State Assembly elections will be fixed based on Plus 2 and SSLC examinations.

Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Rajesh Lakhoni while speaking said, The final electoral rolls after the summary revision will be released on January 20. The final electoral rolls have been sent to Indian Election Commission. A high-level Election Commission team from New Delhi will visit Chennai in the third week of this month to review ongoing preparations for the upcoming Assembly elections.

They will also hold discussions with electoral officers and representatives of political parties. There were around 43,000 claims for issuing duplicate voter identity cards from the four flood-affected districts and of them, 18,000 have been distributed to the voters through the Booth Level Officers. The remaining cards will be distributed in the next few days. Tamil Nadu e service centres will help in matters related to how to make corrections on voter ID cards and how to replace ID cards lost in the recent floods.

An amount of Rs 25 has to be paid to obtain a fresh card. I have also written to Election Commissioner to reduce this fare. Once I get the communication I will reduce the fare. The EC has procured a software tool to monitor the internet. The software tool will scan the internet for poll-related advertisements and we can check whether the ads are paid or free. We can also examine the content to ensure nothing objectionable is propagated. This would help the EC to keep a tab on expenditure details submitted by candidates and parties.

The EC would also get advertisement tariff from ad agencies to cross check the information provided by the candidates and parties. Online political advertisements have to be certified by the poll body. The EC had issued guidelines on social media in October 2013 and the expenses are to be submitted to the Commission post-elections. The State Election Department has taken steps to get over 60,000 Electronic Voting Machines from the States of Gujarat, Bihar and Maharashtra. As a first step towards conduct of free and fair elections, I have asked the District Collectors to transfer officers who have completed three years or more in their present posting.

Based on this, the officers are being transferred. We have sent the time table of Tamil Nadu SSLC and Plus 2 examinations to the election commission. Similarly we have also asked colleges and universities to send their exam schedules. We will also send this to the election commission. Based on this the Election Commission will fix the Tamil Nadu State Assembly election dates.
