TRAI insists on compliance with call drop regulation

Posted on: 05/Jan/2016 1:04:32 PM
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India widely known as TRAI has insisted all the telecom operators to comply with call drop regulations with effect from 1st January even when they show defiance and say they can make compensation only when it is ordered by the court.

TRAI has reminded about call drop regulations to all telecom operators. TRAI has rolled out an amendment in the Telecom Consumers Protection Regulations on 16th October 2015. In this, it has added rule that mandates compensation to be given by mobile service providers. It should be provided to subscribers for call drops or automatic disconnection of calls due to technical glitches in the network.

A compensation of Re 1 is insisted for each and every call drop and the compensation cap is Rs 3 per day. Telecom providers have sought for the Delhi high court, against this regulation.

Ashok Sud, the secretary of AUSPI said this issue is sub-judice and that compensation will be provided when the court insists on it. There is currently no stay on the regulation, and the industry is aware of this. No coercive action will be taken by TRAI against telecom operators until the next date of hearing which is 6th January.

Such coercive action is also inclusive of complying with the regulation. Rajan S Mathews, the director general of Cellular Operators Association of India said telecom operators are not ready for implementing this because of couple of complexities in the method all of which are brought to the notice of court.
