CM announces place to live for flood affected, but the tenements are non livable

Flood hit citizens in the city, who are currently in relief camps, can move into houses built by Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board (TNSCB), said Chief Minister J. Jayalalitha. The TNSCB has built 11,000 houses in Okkiyam Thoraipakkam and Perumbakkam`s Ezhil Nagar.
Although the announcement comes as a relief to many, a visit to the areas shows a different story. The tenements are in such bad shape that one cannot live there. There are no amenities, drainage or electricity. One person who was allotted a 200 sq. ft. house in Perumbakkam said, (I) paid Rs. 19, 500 to get it. Since there were no proper facilities, I chose to stay put in our slum dwelling in Egmore. But the floods washed away everything and now I am desperate to move in to the TNSCB home. A lady staying in Okkiyam said, Many houses (are) vacant and gathering dust.These houses were built with sub-standard material; the roofs leak and there is water stagnation in many spots. I am scared of the diseases that will follow... During the recent rain, flood water entered most of the ground floor houses. Many moved to their relative`s houses in search of shelter.
