Rains bring out bad condition of roads, underground pipelines

Posted on: 08/Dec/2015 10:45:15 AM
Roads in the city have taken a big beating during the rains over the past few weeks. Although work is going on to repair the damage, the condition is so bad that they continue to cave in.

A part of the till now well maintained Rajaji Salai in Royapuram caved in on Sunday. Says a resident of Royapuram, I was shocked when a huge pit developed all of a sudden but fortunately there were no motorists there at the time. We immediately alerted police who barricaded the spot. Many residents feel that this may be due to the hurried re laying of the road just before the elections for the R.K. Nagar constituency. We don`t know how stable this road is. Who will be responsible if something happens to motorists using the stretch, they say. However, corporation officials say that the cave in was a result of a burst pipeline.

Many cave ins have been reported in the city over the past weeks. Major ones include those on Taramani Link Road, one near Madhya Kailash and one on P. S. Sivaswamy Salai.

Commuters are not happy with the quality of the roads. This in spite of the fact that Rs. 1604.83 crore was spent on roads in the year 2014 - 15 only. Experts feel that the compromise is due to bribes given and taken by politicians and other authorities. Gradual leaking of the sewerage pipelines underneath Rajaji Salai was responsible for the accident. The leak probably caused water to seep into layers and weaken the base on which the bitumen road had been laid. The cavity below the road could have been formed over a long period of time,
