Traffic congestion creates chaos on Thevar Jayanthi

It was Muthuramalinga Thevar`s birth anniversary on Friday. Thousands of supporters thronged Anna Salai, causing a heavy traffic jam. There is a statue of Thevar at Anna Salai in Nandanam.
The Chennai Traffic Police usually announces diversions in and around a venue during an event of this sort. However, they failed to do so this time. Instead policemen were seen diverting traffic at many junctions. This resulted in a jam at the Saidapet - Little Mount junction. Here, angry motorists were made to take diversions from Guindy towards Raj Bhavan, Gandhi Mandapam road and Kotturpuram.
The path leading to Gemini Bridge was blocked by supporters in vans, autos and trucks. Another part of the city that was jammed was CIT Nagaer, South Boag Road, Adyar and Velachery. One of the motorists said, (I) was held up for over an hour on Anna Salai. It was sheer mismanagement. Despite knowing the magnitude of the event, traffic arrangements were not sufficient.
