Inappropriate safety measures for fireworks storage and transport

Firecrackers that are bring transported from Sivakasi into the city, and stored in city warehouses are being done without safety measures in place. According to officials, the rules are vague and they have not received complaints of any harm done.
In the wake of the Diwali season, fireworks are transported as regular cargo in lorries. An official from the transport department said, `There are no specific rules or guidelines on transportation of fireworks because the demand is only seasonal. But if a fleet owner wishes to transport hazardous chemicals or explosive substances on a regular basis, he must get a permit from the transport department. The department conducts regular checks of lorries, buses and private vehicles during the festive season. If we find illegal transport of hazardous material, we seize the vehicle and hand it over to the court. The operator has to move the court to retrieve his vehicle.`
An official from the fire department said, `It`s usually the case that transport, fire or police departments look into the issue only when an accident takes place when fireworks are being transported. Since Diwali is round the corner, we expect to get applications soon.`
Similarly, a police official said, `We can act only on complaints. We have not received any complaint regarding illegal storage or sale of fireworks so far. If we get specific information, we will raid the place and take action.`
