Bikers and commuters find it irksome to travel during rainy days in Chennai as the problem of water stagnation makes driving really difficult. These troubles are as a result of blockage in manholes. When these manholes are unblocked by sanitation workers, they often get attacked by poisonous gases which are in fact life threatening.

Taking this trouble forward, Narayanan, the director of Change India foundation filed a Public Interest Litigation petition in the Madras High Court. By unblocking these blocks in the manholes, nearly 150 sanitation workers have lost their lives so far. He has plead to provide compensation to all of their families. Further, he has insisted the use of machineries to unblock these manhole blocks and requested to make necessary actions to the municipal body.

Inquiries on the petition were made by Chief Justice S.K. Goel and Justice R. Mahadevan. A reply petition was filed by the deputy commissioner of Chennai Corporation in this regard. In his reply, he has stated that 10 advanced machines are to be purchased for unblocking manholes. The necessary tender works are already done. Now, these unblocking works are taking place with the help of a machinery that is brought from Delhi.
He further added that, nearly 4,739 illegal drainage connections were found as per a petition filed with the high court in 2014. Over 4,353 connections out of this are already disconnected. Further, in 15 zones of the corporation, about 3,290 illegal connections are identified. Works are on the go to disconnect these connections as well.

Justice postponed the hearing of these cases to 9th of October.
