Grand World Friendship Day celebrations in Chennai

Posted on: 03/Aug/2015 1:04:50 PM
World Friendship Day is celebrated throughout the world on 2nd August. Similarly this was also celebrated in Chennai with much fervour. Friends greeted one another in social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter. The origin of this can be traced back to years after the Second World War. There was a lot of hate and mistrust between people. So the US Congress in 1935 officially declared the first Sunday of August to be Friendship Day. The holiday later caught on in other countries as a noble tradition to be carried out, and in 1997 the United Nations even named A A Milne`s fictional teddy bear, `Winnie the Pooh` as the World`s ambassador of friendship.

From that say onwards, the World Friendship Day which began in America spread throughout the world including India.

The celebrations was seen very much in Chennai. Being a Sunday only made it special as kids went around to their friends` houses and tied wrist bands to mark their friendship.

Most of the popular hangouts in the city saw an increase in the number of people dropping in.
