Kerala government has announced that it would permit only vegetables from Tamil Nadu which is approved by the Department of Health. Hence, Tamil Nadu government is expediting the task of giving the Health Certificates for vegetables being transported to Kerala.

Around 300 trucks (Lorries) carry 500 tons of vegetables from Tamil Nadu districts including Coimbatore, Dindigul, Kanyakumari, and Theni. Potato, cabbage, raw bananas, banana flowers, cauliflower, capsicum, small onion, parsnip, and carrot are some of the vegetables sent by large scale vegetable merchants who buy them from the farmers. Some farmers send the vegetables directly.

There was a complaint raised from Kerala that the vegetables from Tamil Nadu contained excess chemicals. Tamil Nadu Agricultural University conducted tests and confirmed that only insecticides were used while producing vegetables. However, Kerala still refused to accept this explanation. Later, Kerala government relented a bit and announced that it will permit vegetables which are certified by the Department of Health. This would be effective from 4th August.

So, Tamil Nadu Government has deployed the Health Inspectors from the Department of Health to issue certificates for the vegetables sent. Large scale traders are charged Rs. 2000/- for this service. For small scale traders, the charge is Rs. 100/-. An official explained, Around 200 small scale traders and truck owners are engaged in sending vegetables to Kerala. So far, 100 traders have been certified.

The balance will be completed before 4th August. Kerala government has made this arrangement just to monitor the persons bringing the vegetable. Certificates have been given also to the personnel who buy these vegetables from the farmers and sell. The task of issuing IDs to drivers of the trucks carrying vegetables to Kerala commenced at Pollachi yesterday, Friday, 31st July.

An emergency meeting was organised in this regard in Pollachi vegetable market complex. Food preservation officers, agricultural sales officers, and traders participated. Wholesale traders from Pollachi Gandhi Market, Thiru. Vi. Ka. & `Thernilai` market and the vehicle drivers will have to register and get the IDs with photographs. The drivers paid the charges on the meeting spot and obtained IDs.
