Lifetime insurance cover for vehicles mandatory-Madras High Court

Posted on: 24/Feb/2015 2:21:21 PM
The Madras high court on Wednesday, posing a series of questions to Union and state governments has asked that why shouldn`t the government amend the Motor Vehicles Act to make lifetime insurance cover for vehicles mandatory.

This will help accident victims and prevent insurance companies escaping from compensating victims on the grounds that there is no valid insurance policy in respect of the vehicle involved in the accident, Justice N Kirubakaran said while passing interim orders on a writ petition from the Oriental Insurance Company in Tiruvallur, on Wednesday.

At present the insurance cover for vehicles comes with a validity of one year, and the policy needs to be renewed every year. Many vehicle owners fail to renew the policy, making it difficult for accident victims or their families to get compensation in case of accidents involving such vehicles.
