The inaugural function of Business Line club for 2010-2011 academic year was organized at B.S. Abdur Rahman University at Vandalur, a Chennai suburb on Wednesday.

N. Ram, Editor-in-Chief, The Hindu,  Abdul Qadir A. Rahman Buhari, Pro-Chancellor ofB.S. Abdur Rahman University, The others are, from left, P. Kanniappan, Vice-Chancellor of the University, Lakshmi Narayanan, Vice-Chairman, Cognizant, and G.Ram Prasad, CEO,Tata Tele Services participated in the function.

Lakshmi Narayanan, vice-chairman, Cognizant in his inaugural address said that the students need to be innovative and creative to be able seize the opportunities of globalization. Virtualization and cloud computing were resulting in a change in the “future of work”, he added.

He further said that the internet, mobility and low cost telecom were fueling the trend of globalization of manufacture of goods which was no longer restricted by geography or political boundaries.  Referring to statistics that one third of present world’s population is in the age group of 17 to 35. This group would be the managers of the next generation and they would be “digital natives and fierce multi-taskers. All manufacturers would develop new applications having ‘the millennia` in mind.”

Students had plenty of opportunities in the AADHAAR UID (Unique Identification Number Project) to “ensure financial inclusion” of those left out, he said. Young engineers and students should seize this chance. Currently many student groups were becoming part of the nationwide project.

N. Ram, Editor-in-Chief of The Hindu, said the country had made vast strides, but several hundred million people were still deprived of food, income and education. This was politically, socially and morally unacceptable. He said the benefits of growth had not trickled down and there had to be a “re-think about strategies to go ahead.”

He told students that the quality of higher education in India was good, though the country did not do very well in basic education. As quality and access were two important issues, he was glad that B.S. Abdur Rahman University had done well in maintaining the balance. He told students that there were many opportunities for them in the media.

G. Ram Prasad, Chief Executive Officer, Tata Tele Services, said mobile services that started just as a voice exchange device had now become a model for getting information and entertainment. This was causing major shifts in the industry. Telecom was increasingly getting into the lives of people, and it would play a greater role in ‘m-commerce` for money transfer. Tata Tele Services would encourage students to come up with creative ideas and novel telecom projects.
