SUPERCROSS SHOW ON SATURDAY

Posted on: 10/Jul/2010 7:54:09 AM

Kind of adventure sport, super show of super two wheeler racing skills is slated to entertain Coimbatoreans on Saturday. High-flying MRF National Supercross Championship will be an action packed entertainment of a different kind this Saturday at the Codissia Complex, the venue of the historical World Classical Tamil Conference. The big boys of supercross from across the country will be here to show off their skills in air and on the ground during the second leg of the MRF National Supercross Championship exclusively for the two-wheelers. Supercross is an off-road motorcycle race in a closed course consisting of a winding dirt trail with jumps, sharp turns and a combination of various obstacles over a muddy terrain. It is rated amongst the top three spectator sports in the world. The opening event in Bangalore attracted over 140 riders. “We expect a similar number of entries for the second leg as well,” said Shyam Kothari of Pune-based Sportstrek, the organizers of the event for the past 10 years. He said there will be nine events as against seven last year. The new additions this year will be the privateers and the foreign open class. The riders are purely private individuals. We have also reduced the number of jumps this year to see the race faster.

In the last edition we had 28 jumps but we have trimmed it down to 20 this year. So, the speed is really going to be high. We have balanced the number of jumps and speed to make the event absolutely exciting.”

The event will also witness a rider exchange programme between Sri Lanka and India. “This year, the top riders from both these countries will ride in the host country bridging the gap of this sport internationally and thus enhancing the level of competition,” said Mr. Shyam.

Ishan and Nuwan from Sri Lanka, astride their KTM and Yamaha, will vie for honours in the Coimbatore event.

Mr. Shyam said the national participation in this championship has also grown ten-fold over the years. Excitement will be at its peak with TVS Racing which has amongst the best of riders competing wheel to wheel.

“Motorcycles in the various classes namely Group ‘B` and ‘C` will range from the regular ones that our Indian market offers.

In some categories modification is permitted and these bikes will be fitted with Indian or foreign race factory made ‘after market` components to make them more competitive,” he added.

The Group ‘A` consists of foreign machines namely Honda CR, Yamaha YZ, Suzuki RM and KTM. “All these machines will differ from being a two or four stroke and with cubic capacity of 125cc to 250cc. This will be the biggest and most prestigious race of the day where India`s top breed of riders will be flying high in the air – a phenomenon which one must seem to believe,” said Shyam.

The Saturday event will commence with the first ‘moto` of this race and will culminate with the second ‘moto`.

The track measures approximately 1200 metres and the circuits consists of a combination of six double jumps, three triple jumps, one table top (measuring approximately 100ft), eight berms and a section of whoop de doos (a series of speed breakers).Pratap Bhagwat and Ashok Yande, both motocross veterans, will design the track to ensure high standards of racing.
