University of Madras to digitize entire collection of books

Vice-Chancellor G.Thiruvasagam announced that The University of Madras was planning to digitise the entire collection of books available in the four libraries on its Chepauk, Marina, Guindy and Taramani campuses. This will include the entire thesis available and stored in the library. The process of digitisation is expected to start around the middle of July and would take around a year, with an estimated cost of Rs.2 crore, he said. Established in 1907 in the Connemara Public Library before being shifted to the University campus in 1936, the Chepauk library alone is estimated to contain over five lakh books and over 10,000 published theses.

There are rare books, handwritten notebooks of mathematical genius Srinivasa Ramanujan among the books available in the library. This for the purpose of re organizing the library with new full-time librarian will take charge of the library bilberry management. All libraries will be equipped with language labs and browsing facilities.

The science campus of the University at Guindy houses nearly 50,000 books, the library of Dr.ALM. Post Graduate Institute of Basic Medical Sciences at Taramani campus has over 12,500 books while the Oriental Research Institute Library on the Marina campus houses a large collection of books on Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Sanskrit and other languages.

This will be completed by August before the Anna Centenary Library is thrown open.
