As a leniency to hotels, restaurants, hotels, bakeries, fruits and vegetable shops and other eateries, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has lengthened the deadline to perceive the license by six more months, i.e., till 4 February, 2015.

This deadline extension is the fourth time, granted by the FSSAI for all the food establishments to abide with the norms of the Food Safety and Standard Regulations.

According to the Food Safety and Standards Act, a license is obligatory for any food industries with yearly earnings of above 12 lakh. Those with lower takings must enroll with the state food safety department.

So far, only 8,083 food institutions across the city have registered with the food safety department. As per the record, about 483 food businesses did not refurbish annual licenses and 782 did not revamp enrollments.

A dealer who falls short to enroll or perceive a license is prone to be compelled to shut shop, pay penalty ranging from Rs 25,000 to 10 lakh or face detention of up to six months.

Deficient in awareness about the rule could also be a cause for slackness in compliance, a food safety official said.

These food institutions have been rendered with adequate time to perceive the licenses or to enroll with the food safety department. Also, owing to the rare inspection of the food safety officials, these food establishments prepare and deliver foods in unhealthy conditions and swindle a crucial health risk to the public at a large extend, said the consumer rights activist.
