Chennai likely to face severe water crisis by 2017

Posted on: 02/Aug/2014 5:31:38 PM
Chennai doesn’t seem to have anything positive with things concerned with water. A recent government data says that the city would require 1584 million litres per day (MLD) by the year 2017 which is thrice the current supply by the metro water and double that of current requirement of the city.

Currently, over 600 MLD is guaranteed by the available sources like the desalination plants and Nemelli and Minjur, Cauvery water from Veeranam tank, aquifiers from Panchetty, Minjur and Neyveli, and Krishna water.

With the growing population of the city by 30 lakh, the city is likely to face sever water scarcity in the next three years. Furthermore, it is worried that the city will have only very little scope for new sources of water supply.

Considering this, the chief minister has passed on orders to set up a 400 MLD and 150 MLD desalination plants at Perur and Nemmeli.
