Soon, Chennaites can pull a sigh of relief from water shortage as the expected Krishna water from Andhra Pradesh is decisively on its track to Chennai.

On Friday evening, water has been released from the Kandaleru reservoir; it travel about 155km along the Kandaleru Poondi canal to connect with Tamil Nadu.

The Water Resources Department Official said that it would take at least six days for the water to attain Poondi reservoir where it would be stockpiled and then delivered to Chennai family units.

Water volume of about 500 cubic feet per second (cusecs) has been freed from the reservoir for the city use, said the Andhra Pradesh authorities.

About 300 cusecs of water every day from the city reservoir is adequate to support drinking water shortage across Chennai city, said an official.

The department demands that the level of water released will be augmented in a week time. Whenever the water volume in city reservoirs is fast-draining for need of rains, Krishna water is significant in strengthening the storage and stopping a critical water catastrophe.

Currently, Chennai Metrowater delivers 587 million litres of water daily from the present water sources.

Accounting the agreement amid Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, Chennai would be receiving 8000 million cubic feet of water, which is sufficient for water supply for about 8 months from July to October.
