Chennai in serious water crisis

Summer has surely left people with parched lips and waiting for the monsoons to peep out, but the south west monsoons has taken a sluggish start in Chennai. Adding to further disappointment is the drinking water crisis that the city is currently facing. This crisis has been more intense compared to what the city faced in the passing decade.
The city’s population is about 7 million for which the estimated amount of water supply per day should be 1000 million liters. But, it is admitted by Metro water that the city has been receiving a supply of only 587 million liters per day since May 2013.
Sources say that the dearth of sufficient monsoons is the reason behind the prevalent water crisis in the city. On last Tuesday, Poondi, Chembarambakkam Redhills and Sholavaram had a total storage level of 2000 million cubic feet which is actually less than 20% of the total capacity which is 11tmcft.
The Veeranam Lake in Cuddalore district is currently acting as the water supply lifeline for Chennai as Metrowater has been drawing 180 million liters per day for fulfilling the supply demands. However, efforts are been made in order to save the situation from worsening.
