Echo of Moulivakkam Building Collapse: New system for giving construction permit!

One of the two 11-storeyed buildings in Moulivakkam near Porur collapsed on 28th June.

So far, 24 deaths have been reported from retrieval efforts.24 severely hurt persons have been retrieved.

The second building is also considered to be unstable & in danger. PWD senior officials checked the stability of the building and declared the building to be unfit for residential occupation and submitted a report to the government.

With this, the current system of giving permission for construction is proposed to be changed. The safety & security of the construction will be checked thoroughly from the stage of giving permission till handing over of the residence to the customer.

Only if the checking authorities are satisfied about the safety and stability of the system, the builder can let the buyers or rentals to occupy the new construction.

Further, the condition of all old constructions in Chennai will be checked thoroughly and a detailed report will be made.

In particular, it is gathered from a statistical report that around 6 lakh constructions in Chennai city residential & commercial complexes have been illegal.

Chennai Corporation has decided to take elaborate checking measures in all wards.

It is understood that Chennai Corporation has already sent notice to stop construction activities for 2638 building which have been illegal.

There are 434 constructions in Thiru. Vi. Ka. Nagar, 433 in Adyar, 415 in Royapuram, 413 in Tondiarpet, 401 in Anna Nagar, and 401 in Ambattur. Chennai Corporation has already sent notice to these buildings this year.
