Proposal of Deer Walkway: IIT-M Campus

Posted on: 16/Jun/2014 12:29:04 PM
Apart from technology, the Chennai IIT-Madras is presenting angst for the blackbuck counts in its campus. The count of the blackbuck has got augmented from 13 in 2007 to 34 this year.

Other than blackbuck, with many other deer wandering in its ground, the IIT-M has strong-willed to generate deer corridors with enough interim amid technology edifices to permit the animals free passage.

Architects sketches up a blueprint for the IIT-M institute, to flatten the old edifices and to build up a six storeyed building by providing a free space for the deer to wander freely amid the grounds. We have given a positive nod for this proposal, said Prof. Baskar Ramamurthy, director of IIT-M.

Our objective is to give top priority to preserve animals and nature in our campus. Thus we have come to the idea of promoting more open space by constructing multi-storeyed buildings. The same will be proposed for our Triplicane and Mylapore campus, he added.

The IIT-M’s yearly animal survey ascertain 34 blackbucks, 403 chital deer and 238 bonnet macaque on the campus last year.

The enlargement in the count of the blackbucks on IIT-Madras university campus could be phrased a victory story in protection and planning, says R. J. Ranjith Daniel, the Wildlife conservationist.

As suggested, the institute has better recognize the grave habitat, territories and the region of herds to defend the deers, and there by the count of the blackbucks got increased, he added.
