3 New Substations in Sholinganallur: Electricity Board Plan

The Chennai Electricity Department has planned to install 3 new substations in Sholinganallur and additional transmission lines in the suburban areas to meet the extra power demand in the city.
The population of Chennai city is burgeoning day-by-day. Industrial plants and other commercial organisations are coming up in the same pace. As such, the demand for electricity also keeps increasing.
The power demand in Chennai was 2550 MW in 2012. Now, it has risen to 3700 MW.
The power demand of the city is met by the power stations at North Madras and Ennore and by transmission from other sources.
2 units of 600 MW each have started functioning in North Madras Power Station. 2 units of Vallur thermal power stations are generating 500 MW each. The project work at the 3rd Unit at Vallur is nearing completion.
However, there is a lack of infrastructure to carry this power and transmission to the different consumer segments. .
The senior officials of Tamil Nadyu Electricity Board are planning to meet and decide the plans for the necessary infrastructure and implement the same at the earliest.
5 new transmission links are planned to connect the power from the above power stations as well as outside sources.
2 new 500 MVA substations were already planned to be installed in Sholinganallur. However, this has been changed to to have 3 new substations at 315 MVA each. In addition, new transmission lines are planned for the areas in Sholinganallur, Guindy, Manali, and Red Hills. If these projects are completed within the next year, there would be no problems of power distribution in Chennai.
