The Chennai Corporation has made it very clear to the general public that they should not pay any charges for its use to caretakers. In spite of the caretakers collect money from the public.
A corporation official said checks are being carried out at toilets to stop the practice. “There is no user fee for public toilets. But we get several complaints that toilets have been occupied by miscreants who collect money,” he said.
Sources said a nexus between ward councilors and conservancy inspectors has led to the problem.
By collecting anything between 1 and 7 from people, these smooth operators make more than 3,000 a month from each toilet, an official said. “They collect money from users allegedly to pay for maintenance charges. But a majority of these caretakers are not employed by the corporation,” the official said.
Residents say a majority of the toilets in the city are in a terriblestate. The premises of the few existing toilets are messy, making it difficult to use. The civic body’s plan to construct 750 modern toilets across the city did not take off because of poor response from firms.
