The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced revised toll charges for 60 toll plazas across Tamil Nadu from June 1. The revised rates, which were originally planned for April 1, were delayed due to election-related restrictions and will now remain in effect until March 31 next year.
Toll fee revisions are carried out every year based on inflation, wholesale price index data, road maintenance costs, and traffic volume. Across Tamil Nadu, there are 77 toll plazas under the control of the National Highways Authority.
According to officials, most toll charges have been increased by around 5% to 10%, while some heavy commercial vehicles may see a slightly higher hike. Daily commuters using cars, jeeps, and three-wheelers will get some relief, as one-way and return trip charges for these vehicles remain unchanged at several toll plazas, including the Chennai (Akkarai) – Mamallapuram route.
However, transport operators and lorry owners’ associations have expressed concern over the revised rates. They say the increase in toll charges for trucks, buses, and multi-axle vehicles, along with higher monthly pass costs, could raise transportation expenses. This may eventually lead to an increase in the prices of vegetables, fruits, and other essential goods.
The revised toll charges will be implemented at major toll plazas including Paranur, Sriperumbudur, Krishnagiri, Vanagaram, Morattandi, Vallam, Madukkarai, Nanguneri, and several others across the state.
