Due to a low-pressure area near Sri Lanka, continuous heavy rainfall is expected in Chennai, Tiruvallur, and Delta districts between November 28 and December 1, warned private meteorologist N. Selvakumar, cautioning that the situation could lead to significant flooding.
According to him, a prolonged severe depression located in the Strait of Malacca between Malaysia and Sumatra remains stationary but is likely to move into the Bay of Bengal soon and intensify.
Meanwhile, air circulation prevailing over the sea regions - south, southwest, and the south of the Gulf of Mannar near Sri Lanka - is expected to form a depression near the southeastern tip of Sri Lanka today (Nov. 25). It may remain in the same position and gradually intensify into a deeper system, moving slowly northwards along the eastern coast of Sri Lanka between Nov. 26 and Nov. 28. This may cause extreme flooding and landslides across Sri Lanka, he said.
Rainfall Forecast
Nov. 26: Light rain likely in Delta districts & South Coastal regions from afternoon.
Nov. 27: Rain to increase slightly over Delta districts.
Nov. 28–30: Continuous heavy rain expected across Delta regions, North Coast including Chennai & Tiruvallur, with possible flood damage.
Dec. 1: Rain may continue in Chennai, Tiruvallur & North Interior districts with heavy spells in many places.
As the weather system is expected to pass 50–75 km away from the coast, moderate wind speeds are likely, the meteorologist added.
Authorities and residents in vulnerable areas are advised to stay alert for flooding concerns, especially in low-lying regions.
