The residents of Chennai have been spending more money buying vegetables and they have been finding it difficult. Now, these residents can feel happy and relieved as the cost of vegetables has reduced in the Koyambedu market. Truth is that not only the cost of tomatoes has gone down now but also the cost of several vegetables.
The drop in the vegetable prices in the market has been mainly due to the fact that there is now an increased vegetable supply from the neighbouring states like AP, Karnataka and from TN also to the Koyambedu market.
Mr. P. Sukumnaran, secretary Koyambedu Wholesale Market Merchants explained that the Tamizh month Aadi has increased the demand of vegetables now but more supply of vegetables has led to reduction in the prices by 10% to 15%.He added that the Koyambedu market has witnessed brisk sales of vegetables after the rates have decreased and also many temple festivals are taking place now.
Currently, tomatoes are being sold for Rs 10 to Rs 15 per kg, potato and beetroot are being sold for Rs 25 to Rs 30 per kg. Vegetables like onions are being sold for Rs 20 per kg and carrots for Rs 40 to Rs 45 per kg. At the Koyambedu market, vegetables like beans and broad beans have become slightly more when compared to last week.
It is noteworthy that mangoes were sold for Rs 70 to Rs 90 per kg, beans for Rs 70 to Rs 75 per kg and broad beans for Rs 45 per kg. Point is that it has created a difference between the retail shops and wholesale shops. The vegetables are being sold at higher prices in the retail shops at the market and also in the Chennai city.
It was brought out by a trader belonging to the Koyambedu market that in the next 2 days a third crop would begin. He then threw light on how the supply of vegetables would increase to 480 truckloads to the Koyambedu market.
