A 50 year old man got a new lease of life now!!
A recurrent chest wall malignant tumour was removed from a 50 year old person from Bangladesh by the doctors belonging to the Chennai based Apollo Hospitals. This is now making superb news. Synthetic material and back muscle tissue was used by the team of doctors to reconstruct the chest wall of this person.
In 2020, the tumour began as a swelling in his chest wall and a surgeon in Bangladesh removed it with his left first and second rib. It came back once again within 6 months.
Initially, chemotherapy was given to the patient as the tumour was large in size but it was not successful. It was revealed by a scan that the tumour was in chest wall and neck with involvement of sternum, collar bone, ribs, important vessels in the chest, neck etc. This was brought to light by Dr. Ajith Pai, senior consultant in surgical oncology and robotic surgery, Apollo Hospitals, Chennai.
A 14 hour surgery was conducted by a team of doctors at Apollo Hospitals. The Tumor along with part of the rib and collar bone was removed. It is worthy to note that the sternum was reconstructed with bone cement encased in a mesh and a new chest wall was made. The good news is that the patient has recovered well in the postoperative period and his cancerous tumour was removed fully. At present, the patient is undergoing radiation therapy. The team of doctors have been appreciated by Preetha Reddy, vice-chairperson Apollo Hospitals.
