How will the underground sewage system in Chennai be in the future?

The Tamil Nadu state government had proposed to implement a project with the help of ADB or Asian Development Bank to identify bottlenecks in the underground sewage system and provide a solution to them. It is known that the underground sewage system in Chennai is very old. It is now said that DPR would be prepared to improve the existing sewerage system at localities like Tondiarpet, Royapuram, Anna Nagar, Teynampet, Kodambakkam and Adyar etc. This was according to TNUIFSL.

To monitor sewer lines remotely in Chennai covering 426km, SCADA or supervisory control and data acquisition would be developed. By the end of the current financial year, the DPR would be completed. Works would be carried out to replace or improve the old sewer lines depending on the design. It is worthy to note that most of the sewer lines in Chennai are more than 50 years old and some sewer lines were constructed during British time.

It was highlighted by an officer from GCC that 24 out of 42 local bodies that merged with GCC as extended zones in the year 2011 have underground sewer lines built after the merger. Around 5200km of underground sewage lines are being maintained by CMWSSB now. Out of that, 1223 km of underground sewage lines were constructed before 1978. Various line departments have been considered by the TN government for forming a technical committee to adopt innovative concepts for planning, design and implementation etc. Institutional mechanism was recommended by the latest CAG report for ensuring coordination of all line departments.
