As per Niti Aayogs Health index (initiated in the year 2017), with respect to overall performance, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Telangana have emerged as the top three states in India. It must be taken into note that the state of Uttar Pradesh was the table topper regarding incremental performances.
Mizoram in the north-east has come out as top performing state in the overall as well as in the incremental performances. This has been in the smaller states category.
For 4 successive years, the state of Kerala has been sensational and it has come out as the best performer in the overall performance. With respect to the overall performances, Delhi and Jammu and Kashmir have been placed at the bottom of the table and they both were leading in the incremental performances. From the base year (2018-19) to the reference year (2019-20), the state of Uttar Pradesh has registered the highest incremental change of 5.5 points. From the base year to the reference year, a vast majority of UnionTerritories have registered a shift in their overall performance rankings.
It is learnt that in the 19 larger states as many as 4 states have improved their rankings while 3 UTs have deteriorated in their reference year (2019-20). From 15th to 12th rank, Assam state moved forward whereas Andaman and Nicobar Islands recorded a huge drop from 4th rank to 7th rank.
The importance of the health sector has been reinforced by Coronavirus pandemic and there is more need now to double up health systems strengthening efforts. Point is that the main aim of the annual health indexes was to track progress on health outcomes and health systems performances, develop healthy competition and encourage cross learning among states and UTs. It was mentioned by the reports that this exercise would help drive the efforts of states and Union Territories.
