The GCC now wants to vaccinate atleast 50 percent of the Chennai residents in 8 weeks as the Covid-19 cases are increasing now. For this, the GCC has issued warnings to the medical officers at various PHCs and has mentioned that action would be taken on the medical officers if they fail to increase the number of vaccinations.
It is learnt that Mr. G. Prakash, Chennai corporation commissioner had instructed the city health officer and city medical officer to take the list of 10 non-performing medical officers for initiating action. It was later brought to light by a source from the GCC that a low performing UPHC or urban primary health centre and UCHC or urban community health centre would be identified and a target has been given to each UPHC and UCHC to vaccinate 100 to 150 persons every day.
In addition, the domestic breeding checkers or DBC were also asked to mobilise 10 to 15 persons to UPHC. It must be taken into account that those who fail to meet the target would be removed from the work. An amount of Rs 1200 would be given to the DBC as incentive if they performed well in their duties.
The zonal officers have been asked to intensify the vaccination drive by the Chennai corporation commissioner in the meeting. A target of 35000 to 40000 vaccinations per day has been fixed now in Chennai city. Every day, around 30,000 persons get vaccinated on an average in Chennai now and around 4.50lahs persons have been vaccinated till now in Chennai. The civic body has been doing many things to increase the vaccination in Chennai and these included organising vaccination camps in those apartments that have more than 200 flats. To mobilise persons from lower socio-economic groups, GCC has decided to utilize the help of self help groups and NGOS etc.
