A fake Aadhaar card racket has been unveiled. A gang that last operated at Sowcarpet was found out because they charged Rs. 120 as a fee. Registration for the Unique Identification Number is free of cost.
The racket could have been functioning in other districts too, since the Census department has acknowledged the existence of over 20,000 fake cards The racket has employed agents to convince residents about the benefits of the card and guide them to their hole-in-the-wall camp that keeps shifting, said sources.
The department could not initiate suo motu action and that people should file a case against such fraud. UIDAI is in charge of issuing Aadhaar numbers in several states, but in Tamil Nadu, the data is gathered by the census department. We don`t have any direct control over Tamil Nadu as it is been covered under NPR by the census departmen, said Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) deputy director general Ashok Dalwai.
