In Chennai, people going by the side of Humayun Mahal at Chepauk Palace would be surprised to see renovation works being carried out by the building centre and conservation division belonging to the Public Works Department or PWD.
There are many heritage structures in the state of Tamil Nadu. The news that has come out now is that as many as 29 of these structures would be renovated by the public works department or PWD at one go.
An amount of Rs 80 crores has been sanctioned by the TN government for renovating buildings such as Government Printing Press of Chennai plus others like district collectorates in places like Cuddalore, Madurai and Pudukottai etc. In the list is also included 8 heritage court buildings and these would also be renovated by the PWD. In the month of January, tenders for the renovation project would be floated and in the third week of February it would be finalised.
As per an officer belonging to PWD, it was clear that the renovation would start in another 2 month and would be completed within a year of time.
Single phase renovation:
The important piece of information is that these heritage structures would be renovated in a single phase for the first time.
Other heritage structures like Kohinoor Sheik Abdullah bungalow and Coimbatore based Governors bungalow would also get renovated.
To restore the Government Printing Press building located at Old Mint area in Chennai, an amount of Rs 14 crores has been allotted. It is said that an amount of Rs 3.1crores has been earmarked for conservation and renovation of the Cuddalore based Collector�s camp building or Clive House.
For the purpose of renovation of collectorates in Madurai and in Pudukkottai, an amount around Rs 4 crores has been allotted. The district court, munsif court and chief judicial magistrate courts in districts like Dharmapuri, Trichy etc would also be renovated. It must not be forgotten that Chennai has got as many as 2467 heritage structures within its metropolitan area or CMA. The amazing piece of information is that this is the highest within any metropolitan area limit in the entire India.
