Medical students in Chennai now fear about COVID present in the medical colleges etc

Posted on: 19/Dec/2020 9:17:06 AM
The news that many from IIT-M and Anna University have tested positive for Coronavirus infection has been the subject of discussion for many now. The fear about this deadly infection has increased even more now in Chennai city. Many medicos in Chennai are having fears about the similar outbreaks of this deadly infection in the government medical colleges.

It is now revealed that the clinical as well as non clinical students have been sharing the accommodation facilities, mess etc inside the medical colleges. The doctors were of the opinion that the risk of Coronavirus infection is more now.

Large numbers of outpatients come to the medical colleges and hospitals for their treatment every day and specific instructions about the safety measures were lacking at the medical colleges in Chennai.

More Covid-19 risk in medical colleges due to direct contact:
It was mentioned by a medico belonging to SMCH, Chennai that the potential risk of transmission of the Coronavirus infection is more in the medical colleges than when compared to other places because of direct exposure to the patients and their attendees.

He threw light on how the safety standards were known to the PG students and medical college service students. He concluded that the first year medical students must also be educated on the safety measures.

It must be taken into account that most medical students stay in the hostels near the medical college and they have common mess and accommodation etc.

It was later brought out by another medical student belonging to a government college that proper orientation is very important at this hour. This was because of many risks of being exposed to the Covid-19 infection upon interaction with other clinical students.

According to the authorities belonging to RGGGH, food is provided in a common space and the students could eat the food in their respective rooms. He added that it would be highly impossible to provide separate accommodation for the students.

The standard operating procedures and the directions given to the students must be worked out. This was according to the senior official belonging to the Directorate of Public Health and Preventive Medicine.

Separate floors for clinical and non-clinical students:
The senior official then hinted that the medical colleges must work on solutions such as allocating a particular floor for the clinical students and another floor for the non-clinical students. Truth is that regulations must be streamlined for the medical students and others.

Director of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, Dr. T.S.Selvavinayagam was of the view that the medical students and other staff members have handled many Covid-19 cases when the infection was at its peak. Hence they would be aware about the safety protocols.
