The need for medical centres in railway stations has come to light after a study taken in the city. Medical centres have been set up only in Chennai Central and Tambaram Stations, that too only this year. The SRM Institute of Medical Sciences set up a centre in Central in April and Global Hospitals set up a centre in Tambaram in May.
According to the EMRI which handles the emergency 108 number, 28 medical cases and 9 trauma cases were made in March and 12 medical and 9 trauma cases in April. Medical cases include dehydration, fever, dizziness, abdominal and chest pain, labour and food poisoning, while trauma includes injuries caused by a fall or an accident of some sort.
‘Though setting up medical units at all stations may not be possible, facilities for stabilisation of
emergency patients could be provided… First-aid facilities, including provision of intravenous fluids, are a must at every station’, said a doctor.
