After 25th of October only, NE monsoon might begin in TN and it has been predicted that northern districts would receive normal rainfall but southern districts might get below normal rains.

On Thursday, the major reservoirs in Tamil Nadu had a combined storage of 140tmcft out of total storage of 198 tmcft. The formation of repeated systems over Bay of Bengal has led to westerlies over TN, south AP, south Karnataka and Kerala. The deputy director general of meteorology, Mr. S. Balachandran had said that the SW monsoon had not fully withdrawn in TN till now. Until the month of September, the SW monsoon brought 24 percent excess rains in TN.

Districts like Tirupur, Theni, Karur, Perambalur, Trichy and Coimbatore received very high rains and 18 districts received high rainfall. Low rainfall was recorded in Villupuram and Tuticorin. For the second time in this year, Mettur reservoir has touched 100 ft and there are n major concerns regarding irrigation commitments. Good inflows have been received at Bhavanisagar and Amaravathi in Cauvery basin and they are now at comfortable positions.

Against the total storage of 10.5tmcft, Mullaipaeriyar has got storage of 4.3 tmcft now. It is well known that Mullaperiyar has been owned and maintained by the TN government in Idukki district in Kerala. On Thursday, it had an inflow of 4157 cusecs. The 5 southern districts would get befitted by the rise in the storage.

It must be taken into account that the storage of Papanasam and Manimuthar in Tirunelveli has been steadily rising with an inflow of 5940 cusecs and 1464 cusecs respectively.

Now, there has been an inflow of 3169 cusecs and 2474 cusecs in Pechiparai and Perunchani dams and this has been possible due to the heavy rains lashing the district of Kanniyakumari. Full capacity is now observed in the Westaern Ghats based Parambikulam-Aliyar dams.
