One of the major water bodys that has been present in the western side of Chennai city, Ambattur Lake, has been in neglected state for many years is well known. This lake has been spread over 440 acres.

The latest news is this lake has been revived as an eco-park. Point is the functioning of this Ambattur Lake has been deferred due to lock down now.

It must be remembered that this Ambattur Lake along with water bodies in Retteri and Korattur were taken up for restoration works at a cost of Rs 59.18 crores. Along the lake bund, 1500 m long walkers track has been created and this was as per the officials belonging to WRD or water resource department. It is now said that the visitors would have also access to anther path in this eco-park.

An official explained about the importance of plants in this Ambattur eco-park and said persons have been employed for the maintenance of the plants. The visitors would be surprised to see outdoor gymnasium plus childrens play area here. When compared to last year the water quality has become much better now here.

Truth is more work would be required for this Ambattur Lake to become a viable drinking water resource. The sewage discharge into this lake has been reduced by 80% and 4 drains have been plugged. It is known that from places like Moondru Nagar, Thirumullaivoyal etc the lake gets sewage.

The issue of sewage dumping into the lake would not be there once when sewage treatment plant operated by Avadi Municipal Corporation starts functioning.

For the sake of increasing the Ambattur lake storage capacity by 25 percent for better groundwater recharge in the neighbourhood, WRD had sought an amount of Rs 21 crores. Presently, this lake could store about 500 million cubic feet of water.
