Around 4000 years back, chitra kulam was established in Mylapore in Chennai. This chitra kulam is now making sensational news.
Important information that has come out now is this chitra kulam is being de-silted for the first time ever since its establishment. In another month of time, de-silting works would get over here. De-silting work is being carried out at a cost of Rs 10 lakhs. One of the main factors for the groundwater table recharge, chitra kulam, is next only to the famous Kapaleeswarar temple tank.
The lack of rains had made the tank in Adhi Kesava Perumal temple dry and this has been since the year 2016. It is important to note that even when all the nearby ponds and lakes got filled up, the chitra kulam remained barren because its seven water canals were choked with garbage and other materials. This chitra kulam has been in the neglected state for these years as it was not renovated due to lack of funds.
As per Mr. N.C. Sridhar, temple trusts chairman, the school students played a huge role in the cleaning of this tank once in 3 months as the funds were not available. He highlighted that the shops near the tank threw garbage into it resulting in the clogging of the canals.
It was pointed out by some locals that from 2005 till 2016 this chitra kulam had full of water and it was a great sight for the eyes. Point to be noted is float festivals were held at the chitra kulam tank.
It must be taken into account that those canals that come under the purview of the temple would be cleaned by them and the remaining would be cleaned by the Chennai Corporation department. This was according to some temple authorities. For the better percolation of water, soil would be removed for 1.5 feet and over this a layer of clayey soil would be laid.
A resident belonging to Mylapore expressed his opinion. He spoke about how the corporation must do their work of de-silting as the temple trust has stepped up to de-silt the tank. He shed light on the encroachments around the temple that needs to be removed. He concluded that storm water drains should be cleaned and the road should be milled so that rain water reaches the tank through canals. The superb information is temple tank provide many benefits for the residents of Mylapore like preventing water stagnation etc.
