On Sunday, 1st September 2019, TNPSC group-4 examination took place and more than 13.5 lakhs candidates appeared for the examination.  It must be noted that this examination was conducted to fill up the 6491 state government jobs.

The shocking piece of information is this TNPSC group-4 examination question paper had many errors and they caused issues for the candidates.

The question paper had one question that asked about the day when Right to Information Act 2005 was passed by the parliament. Various options that were given were October 12, October 20, October 21 and October 25. It is worthy to note that 12th October was the day on which the act came into effect but not passed by the parliament.

According to Mr. Natraj Subramaniam, trainer for the exam, all the 4 options to some questions in the general section were wrong. There were also some translation errors in the question paper.

It is important to mention that there was one question that asked about the number of political parties that took part in the first general elections in 1951. The options given were 54, 64, 74 and 84, but the correct answer was 53.

Some trainers pointed out about an error in the question paper regarding the location about zero degrees longitude and zero degrees latitude. One option that was given was Atlantic South and West of Africa but it should have been Western Africa. Not only that, there was a question about the Article 21 of the Constitution where rights were mentioned wrongly as duties.

A candidate spoke about the presence of translation errors in the question papers. He said that in the match the following type question where incidents and the correct dates need to be matched the 4th option in column A of English version was given as dissolution of the first Lok Sabha. In the Tamil version, it was given as Republic Day and it created huge confusion for the candidates.

As per the trainer, Mr. Natraj, the errors in the question papers were not an isolated incident. He spoke about how from January to August in 2019 TNPSC conducted 25 examinations and almost every exam had mistakes in 5% to 15% of the questions. It must not be forgotten that in the past High Court of Madras on few occasions had pulled up the commission for repeating the mistakes in the group-1 examinations. Answer keys to the questions would be released soon and the answer keys could be challenged by the candidates. This was according to an official belonging to TNPSC.

The point is the group-4 scores are used to shortlist the candidates for the vacancies of junior assistants, village administrative officer, bill collector, typist and stenographers in the departments of the state government.
