Testing of pipelines along Sikkarayapuram quarries that lie close to Mangadu are being tested and the Metro Water Officials are to continue testing for 10 more days. Soon, the city would start getting water from these quarries probably in a fortnight.
According to Metro water official sources, there are 25 quarries across 175 acres of land area. Here, the overall capacity is 345 mcft water. On a daily basis, about 30mld water is likely to be extracted from these quarries, as per metro water plans.
In a few places, there are pipe leakage. These are now rectified and for another ten days, testing shall be continued, say officials. Water sourced from these quarries shall be transferred for treatment at Chembarambakkam and from there, water supply to different parts of the city shall be done.
For about 4.5km stretch, these pipelines are laid. There are floaters used for keeping these pipelines floating in water. They will be used only for maximum of 40m, say officials.
As an arrangement to meet the demand, the metro water department has got the quarry water as a reserve and furthermore supply shall be met using water sourced through boroewells in agricultural lands.
On alternate days, water supply is being sourced of the range 550mld across various regions in the city. However, across the city, in many parts, there are complaints of improper or nil water supply after Pongal.
As water is pumped out of quarries as well as agricultural wells, the lack of supply will be resolved, say officials. In another 15 days, the city residents will start receiving water sourced at Sikkarayapuram.
