During the persistent rains in Kerala in the last 2 weeks, train transport was among the most seriously affected sectors. With the tracks being set right, the resumption of the regular trains recommenced gradually. From yesterday (Wednesday, 22nd August), all the regular trains to Kerala have been resumed.
When enquiring about the status regarding this to a senior Southern Railway official, he informed that there were heavy floods due to the recent incessant rains in Kerala and tracks in the regions of Palghat, Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikkodu, Kochi, and Ernakulam were submerged in water. Some tracks got severely damaged covered by landslides. Because of this, the regular train service from Tamil Nadu to different parts of Kerala had to be cancelled. A section of the 200 train services to Kerala was severely affected and got cancelled. Further, 58 express trains were diverted through other routes.
The damaged tracks and the extent of damage were identified immediately and restoration was undertaken promptly. The higher officials, staff and the workers from Tamil Nadu Railways were diverted to these areas and the repair activities were expedited. Meanwhile, after a gap of 7 days, the train services to Kerala was resumed in full scale as usual.
