It is well known that Santhome and Mylapore are superb residential localities in the city of Chennai. Now these two important places in Chennai are making news for wrong reasons.
These two places have surprised many by featuring in the media for their poor civic infrastructure and there are many issues ranging from storm water drainage to the damaged roads.
Many residents belonging to Mylapore area are irked as the issues brought out by them were not considered seriously by the corporation. The issues such as the narrow road width, lack of medians and speed breakers plus unauthorised parking, improper traffic regulations in Kutchery Road, Bazaar Road, Mada street etc are creating huge problems to many here.
It must be noted that the Kutchery Road that connects Luz Church Road with Santhome High Road sees heavy traffic at the signal here. Buses and many trucks ply at high speeds from both the directions in the stretch that is 30 feet wide.
A Mylapore based resident spoke about how Kutchery Road is for the pedestrians and motorists and how the stretch cannot be widened due to topography of this place. The resident later spoke about how the corporation must ensure basic safety features like speed breakers, traffic signals etc.
According to a Bazaar Road resident, due to lack of medians the pedestrians crossing the road get involved in many accidents. There are also many problems caused by tourist car operators who park their cars on the main road. Unauthorised parking has been a serious concern in Mylapore and no action has been taken by the concerned authorities. The lack of traffic police personnel and lack of traffic police check points except at Santhome Junction has resulted in minor accidents.
It is known that in Kutchery Road there are many shops that sell textiles and handicrafts. A woman shopkeeper expressed her views and spoke about how traffic congestion has grown over the years and how restrictions at Mada Street and Bazaar Road would prevent parking near the market area.
An official belonging to the corporation confirmed that speed breakers would be added and traffic police would be deployed.
